About The Fix First
The Fix First helps homeowners and renters in the United States figure out what is wrong with their washer, dryer, dishwasher or refrigerator, and what to try before paying for a repair or buying a new appliance.
Why this site exists
A broken appliance usually comes with a vague error code and a pile of confusing forum threads. Every guide on this site tries to answer three questions in plain language: what the problem most likely is, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to call a professional.
How the guides are made
- Each guide starts from the manufacturer’s official manuals and service documentation for the appliance it covers.
- Guides are drafted with the help of AI tools and then reviewed and edited by a person before they are published.
- Steps are written for a typical U.S. household: 120 V power, imperial units and the brands most common in American homes.
- Safety comes first. Every repair guide tells you to unplug the appliance and shut off the water or gas before you touch anything, and says clearly when a job should be left to a licensed technician.
What The Fix First is not
- It is not a repair service, and it does not sell parts or appliances.
- It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, Frigidaire, Maytag, Kenmore or any other brand mentioned. Brand names are used only to identify the appliances a guide applies to.
- It is not a substitute for a licensed technician. Please read the Disclaimer page before attempting any repair.
How the site is funded
The site is supported by advertising and, in some guides, affiliate links. They help pay for the site and never change what a guide tells you to check or fix first.
